Swoozie's going out of business, shuttering two Houston-area stores

Personalized gift retailer Swoozie’s is going out of business and closing 43 U.S. locations, including two in the Houston-area.

Founded nine years ago, the Atlanta-based company offered presents, paper, printing and personalization.

Founder Kelly Plank Dworkin posted a letter on the company’s Web site, saying that Swoozie’s had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

“While I kept a positive outlook throughout this process with respect to finding a way to emerge as a reorganized company, it doesn’t appear we are going to be offered that chance,” she wrote. “I am now facing the somber reality that Swoozie’s is swiftly approaching a path to complete liquidation barring some unforeseen miracle.”

Swoozie’s is offering merchandise at up to 30 percent off at its retail stores including the ones 2210 Lone Star Drive in Sugar Land and 9595 Six Pines in The Woodlands.

Richard Kaye, a spokesman for Hilco Merchant Resources LLC, which is handing the wind-down of the company, said the stores could close anytime over the next six to eight weeks, or possibly sooner.
